As a pediatric occupational therapist, I perform comprehensive feeding evaluations for infants aged 0-6 months facing feeding, eating, swallowing and oral motor issues. Utilizing a compassionate approach, I collaborate with families and the complete medical team to devise a treatment plan aimed at guiding and supporting them in achieving their feeding goals.

A Comprehensive Oral Motor Feeding Evaluation
The 2 hour evaluation Includes a thorough medical history, developmental screening, and hands on examination addressing:

Oral-motor/sensory issues affecting functional feeding, including any anatomic, muscular & tethered oral restrictions affecting the smooth coordination of swallowing

Safety of swallowing with breast feeding or bottle feeding

Develop strategies to support safe feeding for both baby and caregivers including: swallowing, lip closure and babbling

Pre-post weight check for breastfeeding

Address bottle nipple flow rate, positioning, paced feeding, and external oral support

Assess for breast and bottle feeding aversion

Oral motor exercises to develop strength and control needed for feeding

Collaboration with other professionals to coordinate a comprehensive feeding program that promotes appropriate weight gain and fosters a positive feeding experience
