As a pediatric occupational therapist, I perform comprehensive feeding evaluations for infants aged 0-6 months facing feeding, eating, swallowing and oral motor issues. Utilizing a compassionate approach, I collaborate with families and the complete medical team to devise a treatment plan aimed at guiding and supporting them in achieving their feeding goals.

A Comprehensive Oral Motor Feeding Evaluation

The 2 hour evaluation Includes a thorough medical history, developmental screening, and hands on examination addressing:

  • Oral-motor/sensory issues affecting functional feeding, including any anatomic, muscular & tethered oral restrictions affecting the smooth coordination of swallowing

  • Safety of swallowing with breast feeding or bottle feeding

  • Develop strategies to support safe feeding for both baby and caregivers including: swallowing, lip closure and babbling

  • Pre-post weight check for breastfeeding

  • Address bottle nipple flow rate, positioning, paced feeding, and external oral support

  • Assess for breast and bottle feeding aversion

  • Oral motor exercises to develop strength and control needed for feeding

  • Collaboration with other professionals to coordinate a comprehensive feeding program that promotes appropriate weight gain and fosters a positive feeding experience

Continuity of Care / Follow Up

  • 7 day telephone follow-up to determine the need for in person re-evaluation visit

  • Schedule a follow up appointment

  • Referral to other professionals, as needed
